Empathy

I was taking a walk today as the sun set behind lifting storm clouds. A bitter arctic cold front had settled in and the clearing sky hinted of an even colder night ahead.
As I passed a stand of old cottonwoods a shiver shot up my spine. For a brief moment I felt in my own bones the deep chill their poor old limbs will suffer tonight.
At first it struck me as odd, that I had such empathy for these simple trees… But as I pondered it on my walk home I realized that it shouldn’t be so surprising.
We’re all in this together, and tribe members need to be able to empathize with each other in order to survive and thrive.
So whether it’s our family members, friends, pets or even some old cottonwood trees – it’s good to see the world through their eyes now and then.
